hairy watches Street Fighter Legacy (2010) - A Short Film Review
56Doesn't Ryu Look Awesome?
After 1994's horrible adaptation and last year's spin-off, will this short film version ever be done right?
It was only this week that I had heard about this short film version of one of the world's most played video game from Capcom to be adapted into a short film from actor/director Joey Ansah (he appeared in The Bourne Ultimatum as an assassin who fought against Jason Bourne) and Owen Trevor to be release only just today unexpectedly in the world wide web.Two days before Joey Ansah treated the fans in his blog and from what was a breaking news in Collider two teaser clips of the short film.
You can watch them below.
The First Teaser Clip
The Second Teaser Clip
After watching these teasers, I was quite anticipated over the outlook of the film. One of the good things that the actors played in the clip (Jon Foo as Ryu & Christian Howard as Ken) looks tremendously good. With the feel of the teasers that was two days before, finally the short film (with a runtime of 3 minutes and 12 seconds) is finally out!
Below is the official short film.
The Official Short Film
What started out as a dream with the small cameo of Akuma (played by Joey Ansah himself), Ryu wakes up from his long nightmarish dream and as usual on his path of discovery until he meets Ken Masters in the forest. From there, the sparring of two friends just like any other video game happened.
After everything, I realize and understood why Joey Ansah wanted to make this short film version:-
- To be faithful to the franchise which most Hollywood studios fail to see.
- To give fans what many wanted.
The costumes, the look and the feel of the movie is just right. While there is no plot (what is to be expected) and what to be expected is just two long time friends/rival sparring with each other in their signature moves is realized. Yes, Ken's Shōryū-ken and Ryu's Hadōken is shown almost perfect but still with flaws in perspective. Between how they do hand-to-hand combat is in par with how the video game is like and the likeness of its fighting techniques are shown. Though towards the end of the film was somehow look a little bit uneven, this short film is what in my opinion should have been done in any adaptation of video games.
With the upcoming The King of Fighters (which I am totally shaking my head after watching the trailer and knowing the main plot) and Tekken (looking forward to it) to be release this year, I just wish some film studio executive and producer notice this short film and hopefully - this time, please make it right as intended? Joey Ansah and Owen Trevor understood that and if ever hire a director for any upcoming Street Fighter movie (or even any adaptation of video games), they should be noticed.
